Central America
December 2008 - January 2009
Our trip through Central America was truly an adventure like no other. We landed in Guatemala City and spent a couple of days exploring the bustling city before heading to the charming towns of Antigua and Panajachel, where we marveled at the breathtaking Lake Atitlan. After returning to Guatemala City, we hopped on an internal flight to Flores to visit the awe-inspiring Tikal Ruins.
Next, we crossed the border into Belize and enjoyed a few relaxing days on Caye Caulker. From there, we took a water taxi to Placencia, where we embarked on a thrilling jungle tour on Monkey River. The journey to Rio Dulce was quite the trek. First, we took a water taxi back to the mainland, then a bus from Independence to Punta Gorda, followed by a ferry to Livingston in Guatemala. To finally reach Rio Dulce, we boarded yet another boat.
On Christmas Eve, we crossed over into Copan Ruinas, Honduras. Christmas Day was unforgettable as we soared over the ruins on a canopy tour featuring 15 exhilarating zip line rides. After Copan, we flew from San Pedro Sula to Roatan Island, where we spent a couple of days soaking in the sun. We then flew to San Salvador to ring in the New Year.
After celebrating, we traveled by bus to Leon in Nicaragua, where we went volcano boarding on Cerro Negro the next day. Following our adventure, we took a taxi to Granada. After a few days there, we set off for Ometepe Island. Upon returning to the mainland, we crossed the border into Costa Rica, making our way to Monteverde to explore the enchanting cloud forest.
From Monteverde, we ventured to Arenal and then on to Tortuguero. The journey to Bocas del Toro in Panama was quite lengthy and challenging. We started with a boat ride through the jungle to Moin, then took a taxi to Sixaola at the Costa Rica/Panama border and crossed the bridge into Panama. A bus ride to Changuinola was next, followed by a taxi to Almirante, finally catching the last water taxi to Bocas del Toro.
From Bocas del Toro, we made our way to Boquete and then to David, where we caught a flight to Panama City. After a few days enjoying the vibrant capital, it was time to fly back home, filled with memories of an incredible adventure.
